Playoff implications abound as Tennessee comes into their home finale and divisional finale today against the Carolina Chaos. Entering the game a perfect 4-0 against the Chaos and defending their home field today, the Tornado stand a good chance to finish out their division series tied at 13-5 with the Spartanburg Blue Eagles.
In the overall picture, it’s a bit more complicated. Tomorrow, Tennessee travels to Morganton for their season finale against the Aggies, needing a doubleheader sweep to finish 24-14, which is the best possible finish since four rained-out games are officially canceled and will go unplayed.
Is it a blessing? Tennessee needed to face the Carolina Stingers twice, the only team they haven’t beaten this year, as well as the Statesville Owls, who have put up a tenacious fight in an even season series, 2-2. For better or for worse, they’ve been omitted from the schedule, leaving 24-14 as the best-case scenario overall, and a 13-5 divisional finish a necessity.
Tennessee’s overall winning percentage (.588) is slightly better than both the Spartanburg Blue Eagles and Lake Norman Copperheads (.583), and a strong finish will help their cause if those two teams play well this weekend also. In order to win the overall No. 1 seed for the postseason, the Tornado need to finish 4-0 and their winning percentage will still be better.
In order to finish with the same amount of wins (and less losses) and offer a more clear-cut final picture, Tennessee can go 4-0 while Spartanburg and Lake Norman have to finish 3-1 or worse. Each team would then have 24 wins, but the Tornado would have fewer losses.
One final ingredient to this potent playoff pie: Spartanburg faces Lake Norman at Hopewell High School tomorrow in those teams’ season finale, a chance for one to one-up the other for home-field advantage throughout the postseason. Meanwhile, the Tornado have to focus on winning elsewhere, starting tonight with their divisional foe, the Carolina Chaos.
And it’s all live, crystal clear, with play-by-play and in-depth analysis on Teamline.
